A heated transmitter mod uses cheap nichrome wire to warm the back of your radio so your hands stay comfortable during cold-weather FPV flying. I built one into my TBS Mambo / Ethix Mambo for about $10–$15 in parts, and it holds a cozy ~100–110°F off a simple 5S or 6S LiPo. No gloves, no plastic hand boxes — just warm palms and better stick control all winter.

If you live in a cold climate and fly FPV, you know the first thing to go is usually your fingers. They just don’t work well in the cold. As a purist, I can’t get comfortable wearing gloves, fingerless or not, and the idea of housing my hands in a plastic box just seems ridiculous to me.

This is actually the second time I’ve modded a radio for heat. I first did it on my old FrSky X9D using a video someone made years ago — I loved that mod so much it inspired me to bring it over to the Mambo I’ve been flying for about a year now. If you haven’t watched the video at the top of this page, definitely check it out before you start.

It’s a super simple mod that anyone can do (carefully). Connect a 6S LiPo or less and you’ve got a stupid-simple fix for cold hands during winter flying. In my opinion it’s a must-have for four-season flying.

This is the second mod on this radio — the first was a custom paint job using the transparent shell.

What is the heated transmitter mod?

After a little digging, I found that nichrome wire — the same alloy used in toasters and heating elements — gets warm when you run power through it. Which means you can basically turn the back of your transmitter into a mini heated blanket.

So I modded my TBS Mambo / Ethix Mambo to heat itself. It costs around ten to fifteen bucks in parts and makes freezing sessions actually enjoyable. It feels kind of like a heated steering wheel… but for your radio. The sides get nice and warm right where your palms sit.

What does this mod do?

  • Keeps your palms warm while flying
  • Improves stick control in cold weather
  • No gloves required
  • Works with a simple 5S–6S LiPo
  • Completely hidden inside the back shell

How does the nichrome heater work?

Nichrome wire has electrical resistance. When current flows through it, that resistance generates heat and the backplate warms up.

You snake the wire across the inside of the back shell, tape it down safely, connect it to a battery, and boom — instant heat. That’s the whole idea: it’s really just tape and wire.


How to build a heated radio mod (step by step)

1. Open the radio and clean it out

Remove the back shell and clean everything out. Mine was packed with dirt, sand, and random field junk from a year of regular use, so I wiped it all down before starting on the heating element.

2. Lay out the nichrome wire

Route the nichrome wire evenly across the backplate and along the side grip areas — especially where your palms naturally rest. My edges have little rubber grips, so I wanted good coverage as high up the sides as I could get, since only the back is heated (that way I can still open and maintain the radio without shorting anything out). I deliberately routed the wire away from the rubber, just in case it ever got uncontrollably hot — I didn’t want it melting anything soft.

Important:

  • Don’t cross wires
  • Don’t bunch it up
  • Keep the spacing even

3. Tape everything down

Electrical tape is your insulation and protection. Cover every exposed section. If any runs have to cross, drop a layer of tape between them — I made a point of never letting bare wire touch bare wire.

4. Add a connector

I tested with an XT60 first, but it stuck out the back and I knew it would eventually get knocked loose (and it left a gaping hole in the shell). So I switched to a flush barrel jack pulled from my old radio — it sits clean, won’t snag, and looks a lot tidier. I epoxied it into place and it’s rock solid.

5. Test before you seal it up

Plug it in and let it run for 5–10 minutes. I ran my early tests through a smoke stopper just to be safe. Here’s what I found:

  • 5S = light warmth (subtle, but there)
  • 6S = perfect cozy heat

Mine settles around ~100–110°F — warm, not burning. One thing to note: once I trimmed the long test leads down to short final leads, it actually ran a touch warmer, since less wire length is wasting the current.

6. Close it up and fly

Once you confirm everything heats evenly, button it up and you’re good to go.

Safety tips (don’t skip these)

  • Never let bare wires cross
  • Insulate everything with tape
  • Test with lower voltage first
  • Don’t leave it powered unattended
  • Keep wire away from rubber or soft plastics

This mod is simple — but it’s still electrical. Take your time.

Is the heated radio mod worth it?

If you fly winter sessions, cold mornings, snow days, or at high altitude — absolutely yes.

Way better control. Way more comfortable. Way longer sessions. I honestly consider it a must-have for four-season flying.

Will the heated mod damage my transmitter?

Not if you keep the wire off rubber grips and soft plastics and insulate every layer with tape. I routed mine away from the rubber specifically so nothing could melt if it ran hot. Only the rigid back shell is heated, and it stays well within safe temperatures.
